How to Become an Emergency Medical Technician

Virginia EMT Logo

Training leading to certification as an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-B) is offered periodically by many Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agencies and educational institutions throughout the region. In most cases, there are nominal charges for this training. The best source to inquire about available courses is the Peninsulas Emergency Medical Services Council at (804) 693-6234 or visit their Course Announcements web page.

A description of the EMT-B course requirements and content can be found on the Virginia Office of EMS website. Use the "BACK" button to return to this site.

Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Physician's Assistants (PAs), based upon prior education and experience, may be eligible for an abbreviated route to EMT and ALS certification.  Candidates should contact the Virginia Office of EMS Training Manager by e-mail or  (800) 523-6019.  Policy numbers T-238 and T-660 apply.
