The Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad held its organizational meeting on May 17, 1968, with approximately forty people attending. Preparations were made for the Red Cross first aid classes to be held, and they were started two nights per week with Gerald G. Immell as instructor.
The first ambulance arrived in June 1968, which made its first public appearance as a fully equipped unit in the annual Spring Festival Parade carrying the appropriate sign in the parade “Last in the Parade, but first on the Job”! We began actual operation as a squad in July, 1968.
Our first Board of Directors were:

In November, 1968, we purchased a lot of land next to the Mathews Laundromat and ground breaking for our first squad building took place in March, 1969. The size of the building was 60 x 40 and we officially moved in on October 22, 1969. In May, 2006 the new and much larger Squad building at 94 Crickett Hill Road was occupied and is the present home of MVRS.
