Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad + Mathews VA 23109 + May 2008

Spring is definitely here! The yellow coating is starting to fade but the coughing and sneezing from allergies still abound.  But it is good to be warmer and soon we'll be complaining about the heat.

Thank You Steve!

Probably the biggest and baddest news is that Steve is leaving us and moving to Virginia Beach this month.  He has been an invaluable asset to the Squad and a friend to all.  When available, Steve was there; he not only pulled duty most Wednesdays morning, day and night but also answered up on many, many calls when an EVOC was needed.  He spent hundreds of hours making sure our fleet of vehicles was up and running and also spearheaded the purchase of new ambulances.  Since joining the Squad in 2001, Steve has served on the BOD numerous times and has always been willing to help out with various Squad projects.

Steve, thank you so much for being such an active and willing member of the Squad.  The very best to you and Karen.  You will be sorely missed by all of us.  Come visit when you can and dip your wings if you fly over.

Congratulations To :)

+  Caroline, a Junior member successfully completed certification requirements for EMT-B. Caroline is #353; unfortunately, she cannot run as AIC until she turns 18.

Thank You To :)

+  Long time members Barbara, Jane and Mike who are no longer responding to calls.  They have dedicated many years and hours to the Squad serving in front and behind the scenes.  We appreciate all of their contributions.  We also appreciate their continued support.

+  Those who continue to respond to extra calls and hopefully more members will pitch in.

+  Dave, whose title should really be CFO, and his assistants Eunice and Maryann for all of their time and effort keeping our finances straight and bills paid.  Through Dave's guidance, the Squad is doing very well.  The fund drive has brought in approximately $60,000!

Welcome Aboard To :)

+  Fred Cary (#514) who has experience in the trucking industry and will be taking over for Steve as Vehicle Maintenance Officer.

+  Joe Hammond, just completed the EMT-B requirements and is beginning his 3QA.  He is #358.  Joe is the pastor of Locust Grove United Methodist Church.

Bylaws Changes

Participating membership at the April meeting voted to make the following changes to the Squad bylaws:

+  The vice president, secretary and treasurer are now voting members of the BOD.

+  Officers and BOD members will serve two year terms.  Refer to the President's message in last month's Rescue News for details.

Training

The "Training Opportunities" notebook has been revived.  Information on classes, workshops, symposiums, etc. will be included and the book will be kept in the bookcase in the back of the training room.  Approval from Glenn, James or Ralph is necessary in order to attend and have the cost covered by the Squad.

Check with Glenn concerning a self-taught training program "When an infant dies at home."  This program must be completed by mid-June to receive CEUs.

An EVOC class will be offered at Deltaville within the next month or two.  We have several members who have expressed interest.  More specific information will be announced as we receive it.  The Squad will be offering another EMT-B class starting in September.

QA/Runsheets

Some reminders/information regarding filling out the runsheets which are legal documents monitored by the state:

+  If you take vitals but don't transport then you treated the patient, so mark the "Treated and Released" box, not the "No Treatment Required" box.  Also mark the "Standing Orders" box.

+  Obtain a Patient Refusal only when you think the patient should go to the ER but they refuse to go.  If you don't think the patient needs to go but you take vitals then it is "Treated and Released."

+  If you are toned to help someone up or from the car to the house, etc. and no vitals are taken, mark the "No Treatment Required" box and the "Public Service" box under "Type of Call."

+  When toned for a MVA, it is best to continue to the scene as long as those involved in the accident are still on scene, even if they say they are okay.

Reminders

+  Please check the bulletin board for events for which standby crews are needed.  There are several events coming up including the bike tour, Relay for Life, Triad and the Gwynn's Island Festival.  Don't forget our Open House!  The more members who sign up, the less time each member has to put in so please try to help out.

+  The slate of nominations for 2008-2009 officers and BOD members will be presented to the membership at the May meeting.  At that time nominations will also be taken from the floor.  Please let Dan, Lindy or Yvette know if you would like to run for a position.

+  Make sure the unit is restocked and supplies are in the correct location before leaving the ER.  Replace items not supplied by the ER when returning to the building.  And remember, more is not necessarily better.  Check the inventory sheet to make sure how many are required and where they belong.  Don't be responsible for the lack of supplies having a bad result on the next call.
+  We will be taking a Squad picture before the June general meeting so all members are asked to wear long, dark pants and white button front uniform shirts.  If you do not have a shirt, contact Lindy.

+  When you are on duty, be sure to acknowledge the tones ASAP so the dispatcher does not have to tone again (unless more members are required).

+  When arriving on scene after other members are there go to the AIC on scene to be briefed on the situation even if you will be taking over AIC.  Don't rush in and start taking over the scene.  Be calm and work together.

+  Keep radio transmissions professional, don't try to be funny or sarcastic and keep traffic to a minimum.

+  Wayne will be riding for EMS this month.
